Irish Cricket Doco – time to stump up

Paul Davey - Documenting Ireland’s cricket odysseyPictured is Sligo-born Sydneysider Paul Davey, the man who unwittingly nabbed the biggest story of the Cricket World Cup – Ireland.

In the current Irish Echo, Paul is our page three, where he tells us the story of how he became the

Irish cricket team’s 12th man. Now he’s back in Oz, and looking for investors for the film so that he can bring it to the big screen, or at least Montrose.

The site is here, the story needs no exaggeration, but it won’t be told unless Paul can pay his visa bills. Direct all your rich billionaire friends here. Denis O’Brien has already done his bit, paying for hotel bills, flights and, Gawd bless him, a mobile phone. Who’s next?

More on Paul, Irish cricket, and the path for both to Hollywood greatness in the next issue of the Irish Echo, out May 9.

The Four-lettered election

Dear Mary…..

Bertie has (at last) called the general election forMay 24. He’s pictured here writing the request for dissolution on the ceremonial sliotar that he had to puck through Mary McAleese’s bedroom window.

Sarcasm is doing well in the polls already. Top blogger turned angry satirical pollster Twenty Major has charted the election in characteristically colourful language and lays out the pitch from all parties here.

WARNING: Twenty is renowned for liberal use of the c-word. Be not afraid.

Waiting for Guinness

Waiting For Guinness

They use our national drink in their name. They wear hats bought second-hand from the wardrobe of pikey flick Snatch (D’ya like dahgs?). But are they in any way Irish? Nah. Not a bit of it.

Their music certainly isn’t. You’d struggle to get a Wednesday night gig in a bar in Lahinch if you showed up with a giant mariachi guitar and a name like Dirk Kruithof.

In any case, having spoken to their manager Marko Simec, who tells me that their new album is on sale now, they’ll feature in the next Irish Echo, due out on May 9. It’ll be worth the wait.

Anzac Backlash

Wednesday saw Australia-wide festivites as the nation celebrated Anzac day, a day of remembrance for Australian and New Zealand forces who served in WW1, mostly at Gallipoli.

The day is marked with especially poignant dawn services, games of two-up and all the pomp and solemnity that goes with war memorials. Save for Bathurst, a war memorial where dawn services were due to take place, but was vandalised late on Anzac eve by two teenagers. The girls daubed Anzac murderers and Aussies don’t fight on the walls of the memorial in white paint.
